Cláudia de Campos was born in Sines in 1859, and by the late 19th century is already a renowned author. Intellectuals, critics and people appreciating her writing evoke some of her works referring to the singularity of her style. It is only in the 21st century that it was possible to bring to light some aspects related to her life and the texts she wrote as an essayist. The topic of divorce, which Cláudia de Campos referred in novels and short stories, reflects traits of her own life justifying an unease shared by a great number of women, who were only allowed legal separation. Whether in favour or against, let us not forget that divorce is only allowed as from 1910, the author’s stand determines, to a large extent, the fate of critics of her work. The study on Campos can lead us to learn more about the political and social contribution of women of a higher social status. Our objective is to make known to the public in general the author we are celebrating through the interpretation of her works by several authors. To mark the one hundred years of the anniversary of her death, the Sines City Council will reprint her novel Ele, in this way joining the organisation of the International Conference mentioned above.
