Post-Cost NEWW Conferences – One hundred years of Cláudia de Campos’ death anniversary (1859-1916)

There is no strong and virile education without a little of struggle and adversity. To know life one needs to have suffered. Pain teaches everything, makes us feel everything, can inspire and create everything.

Cláudia de Campos, 1908

In celebration of Cláudia de Campos’ Centennial Death Anniversary we wish to celebrate our first women writers and also evoke their contemporaries.

National Library of Portugal | Lisbon | 24th and 25th November 2016

Centro de Artes | Sines | 26th November 2016

On the occasion of Cláudia de Campos’ Centennial, we wish to remember other renowned women authors whose works we would like to associate to this date, bringing together in this manner authors for whom the dates 1616, 1716,1816, 1916 and 2016 are meaningful. In these circumstances we have, for instance, Charlotte Brontë (1816-1865) and Malwida von Meysenburg (1816-1903), as well as Isabel de Wied/Carmen Sylva- Queen of Romania (1843-1916) or Dorothe Engelbretsdatter (1643-1716).

We have therefore summoned researchers from different scientific areas (arts, sciences and humanities) with interdisciplinary approaches similar to what has been done in other Post-Cost NEWW Conferences, to reflect on the importance of female authorship in this temporal frame, as well as on the social and literary relationships that these personalities enabled to build.

Recalling that Cláudia de Campos’ writing crossed borders, with her works being appreciated mainly in Brazil and Spain, we would like to stress that culture and world view she possessed turn her work into a privileged locus for analysis.

Thus the pattern of the intersections between culture, society, writing, identity and memory will be the background for the interdisciplinary debates we wish to trigger, thus contributing to the reflection on female authorship in general.
